Tony & Candi Caporal
Co-founders

In 2005, just days after returning from their honeymoon, Candi and Tony Caporal found themselves in the M.D Anderson Cancer Center in hopes that they might understand the cause of Candi’s illness. A few weeks and many medical tests later, Candi was diagnosed with stage II-B Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Exacerbating their worst fears, Candi was informed she had a 60% chance of becoming infertile as a result of the necessary chemotherapy treatments. Not only was the couple struggling with the emotions and stress of Candi’s cancer diagnosis, but they also had to quickly learn how to navigate the world of fertility preservation in the few weeks before the cancer therapies would begin. Perhaps the most frustrating part was that a price tag was quickly placed on the possibility of starting a family. Facing the high costs of in-vitro fertilization procedures, the young couple was forced to take out a loan to ensure that they might be able to start a family. Candi and Tony were also extremely disappointed that there was no local support groups, financial assistance programs or other organizations they could reach out to for help. This experience inspired Candi and Tony to start the Caporal Assistance Network (CAN), to assist other young couples with cancer in achieving their dreams of beginning a family. Today, Candi and Tony are proud parents of three children and are still supporting the Central Texas community.
